Pedestrian struck and killed at Mason City Fareway parking lot

MASON CITY - A pedestrian was struck and killed by the driver of an SUV Saturday afternoon at the Fareway grocery store in downtown Mason City.

MASON CITY – A pedestrian was struck and killed by the driver of an SUV Saturday afternoon at the Fareway grocery store in downtown Mason City.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, the accident took place at 2:38 PM at the Fareway grocery store parking lot, 400 N. Delaware Avenue, in downtown Mason City.

The names of the driver and the victim are not yet released.

The vehicle involved was a 2004 Chevy Tahoe.

According to the Patrol, the Tahoe was traveling southbound in the parking lot when the unknown victim was struck in th traveled portion of the parking lot. The victim was transported by ambulance to MercyOne Hospital, but did not survive.

The Tahoe was towed away from the scene by Lake Towing.

The accident remains under investigation.

UPDATE: The driver of the Tahoe has been identified as 45-year-old Timothy L. Best of Mason City.  The victim has been identified as 75-year-old Sharon Vivian Hamm of Mason City.

According to an obituary, “Sharon worked at Alexander Manufacturing for over 20 years. She enjoyed solitaire and Tri-Chem painting, as well as cooking and baking. She was known to always be in the kitchen, feeding and taking care of others. Overall, she cherished her family, spending as much time as possible together.”

He has poor eyesight and I know he is a good person who most definitely would not have tried to do this on purpose or was under the influence he is a sober person and I’m so sorry for the loss that’s so sad I’m not justify anything I’m just saying I don’t think he was on his phone at all

So sad that.it happened he must been moving and on his phone. Time will tell. To many people still on phone driving see it all the time.

Sharon was the nicest person you’d ever meet. My sincere condolences to Terry , Tammy and Danny. RIP Sharon.
