Brett was born on February 11, 1963, to Lester and Gail (Knutson) Bates. He grew up in Burchinal, and he graduated from Clear Lake High School. After finishing school, he began what would become his lifelong career in construction. Known for his careful attention to detail, Brett took great pride in his work and was often considered a perfectionist. For many years, he worked alongside his family in their business, Bates Brothers Construction.
To those who knew him, Brett was a gentle giant. His presence could seem intimidating at first, yet his heart was filled with kindness. He loved to make people laugh and was always ready with a quick joke or a clever comeback.
Outside of work, Brett enjoyed staying active. He could often be found lifting weights or tinkering with his truck until it was just the way he wanted it. He also liked listening to music, and when football season rolled around, he rarely missed the chance to cheer for his Minnesota Vikings or the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Above all, family was the most important part of Brett’s life. He cherished his roles as father, grandfather, brother, and son, and he was always there when his loved ones needed him.
Those left to cherish the memory of Brett are his daughter, Tessa Bates and her significant other, Joe Gleason; grandchildren, Benjamin Gleason and Chloe Gleason; siblings, Terry Bates and significant other Laurie Duryee, Becky Bates and significant other Jarett Krull; father, Lester Bates; nieces and nephews, Eric, Lindsey, Asher, Stephanie, Jessica, and Charlie; as well as many extended family members and friends.
Brett is preceded in death by his daughter, Brooke; mother, Gail Bates, and sister, Debbie.
