RURAL SAC COUNTY, IOWA – An elderly Northern Iowa man was killed when another driver’s pickup truck slammed into the driver’s side of his Camry while trying to pass a semi.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, on August 21, 2025, at approximately 7:29 AM, a black Dodge Ram operated by 47-year-old Jeremy Fank of Carroll, Iowa, was traveling north on Union Ave in rural Sac County. The Ram attempted to overtake a semi tractor trailer. In the process of overtaking the tractor trailer, Fank observed a red Toyota Camry operated by 90-year-old Roy Russom of Wall Lake, Iowa, traveling south on Union Avenue. Both the Ram and the Camry took evasive action, swerving towards the west ditch. In the process of trying to avoid each other, the Ram struck the Camry on the front driver side. Both vehicles came to rest in the west ditch.

As a result of the collision, Russom was pronounced deceased on scene by Sac County EMS.

Police said dense fog was present which reduced visibility.

The Iowa State Patrol is handling the investigation.
