Shirley was born on December 10, 1930 in Leland, IA to Joseph Gerhard Flugum and Gena Theresa (Monson) Flugum. She attended a nearby country schoolhouse for many years and went on to graduate from Forest City High School. After completing clerical studies at Waldorf College, she went on to hold various positions over the years in Albert Lea, MN, Ames, IA, and Forest City, IA.

While in high school, she met her future husband, Bob Irwin Hansen. After Bob completed his military Naval service, they were married on December 22, 1957 at Winnebago Lutheran Church in rural Lake Mills, IA. Together they raised three children, Kristine Kay, Kimberly Jo, and Timothy Peter. During this time, her primary role was that of a wife and homemaker for her family.

Shirley devoted her life to raising their children in a loving, Christ-filled home. She cherished the time spent with her growing family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She always found joy in life’s simple pleasures such as morning coffee with dear friends, watching the wildlife on their acreage, cheering on the Minnesota Twins, and searching for that next early Colonial and primitive antique.

She is survived by her three children: Kristine (Kent) Reeves of Bella Vista, AR, Kimberly (Todd) Dakken of Lake Mills, IA, and Timothy (Susan) Hansen of Nevada, IA; eight grandchildren: Katie (Matt) Hardy of Perry, IA, Megan (Grant) Fjetland of West Des Moines, IA, Joseph (Danielle) Dakken of Lake Mills, IA, Zachary (Abby Stephenson-fiance) Hansen of Nevada, IA, Tyler Hansen of Sioux Falls, SD, Elizabeth (Nathan) Smith of Bentonville, AR, Jennifer (Jacob) Newell of Bentonville, AR, and Christopher Reeves of Lotus, CA; 12 great-grandchildren: Ella and Kellen Hardy, Will and Mila Fjetland, Parker and Beckam Dakken, Elijah, Evelyn, Violet, and Luke Smith, and Joseph and John Newell.

Shirley is preceded in death by her husband, Bob in 2023; parents, Joseph and Gena Flugum; and sisters, Shirley May and Betty Lou.

A special thank you to the Lake Mills Care Center and Hospice of North Iowa for their kindness and Shirley’s wonderful care.
