
MUSCATINE, IOWA – An Iowa man took an alleged domestic dispute to a Hy-Vee grocery store, where he shot and killed a woman and then turned the gun on himself as he fled.
According to police, at approx. 2:01 PM on June 20, 2025, Muscatine police responded to reports of shots fired inside Hy-Vee, 2400 2nd Avenue in Muscatine. A female victim, identified as 37-year-old Kalista Hallberg of Letts, Iowa, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Reportedly, she had been shot multiple times by a male known to her.
The suspect, Ian Hernandez of Davenport, fled the scene, but was located shortly after with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He remains in critical condition, according to police.
According to an obituary, Kalista Hallberg was a digital creator, and “a light that shined ever so brightly. There wasn’t a room she walked into that she couldn’t light up immediately. Her laugh and smile were one of a kind and to know her was a blessing in itself. Kalista had a love for all things pink, glittery, and Barbie.” She leaves behind two children.
Preliminary findings point to a domestic dispute, police said, and an investigation is ongoing.
