Women’s College Basketball: UNI coasts past Green Bay, 71-56

UNI women’s basketball improved to 2-0 on the season with a 71-56 victory over Green Bay.

GREEN BAY, Wis. – UNI women’s basketball played in its first road game of the season against Green Bay on November 9. The Panthers took the lead early and never let up, taking home a 71-56 victory and improving to 2-0 on the 2024-25 season.

The Phoenix opened the game with a basket which was answered by Maya McDermott on a pull-up jumper for UNI’s first points of the game. The teams battled back-and-forth into the media timeout which saw the Panthers hold a slight advantage at 8-7. Back-to-back buckets from the Phoenix gave Green Bay a three-point lead before a pair of layups from Bri Robinson and Grace Boffeli put UNI in the driver’s seat at 12-11 after the first quarter.

A seven-point run from the Panthers to open the second quarter gave UNI a 19-11 lead before a Phoenix layup cut the run. Back-to-back threes from Kayba Laube and Maya McDermott pushed the UNI lead to 12 at 25-13 which forced a Green Bay timeout. Out of the timeout, the Panthers went on a 16-11 run including a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Taryn Wharton to close the first half with a 41-24 lead for UNI.

Out of the halftime break, each team scored six points which took the matchup into the third-quarter media timeout with UNI ahead 47-30. Boffeli knocked down a pair of free throws followed by a layup from Goebel to give UNI a 19-point lead. Green Bay cut into the UNI lead with a 6-point run before the Panthers posted their own six-point run to hold a 57-36 lead heading into the final frame.

The Phoenix opened the fourth quarter with an eight-point run and cut the UNI lead to 13 at 57-44. McDermott ended the run with a layup. The teams battled close into the fourth-quarter media timeout with a +1 margin going to Green Bay at 5-6 over the period. UNI stayed ahead at 64-50 at the break. UNI scored seven more points down the stretch to take home a 71-56 victory over Green Bay.

Maya McDermott led the Panthers with 22 points in her 33 minutes on the court. She added seven assists. Taryn Wharton and Grace Boffeli were the other Panthers in double figures with 16 points each. Ryley Goebel led the Panther rebounding effort with 10 boards.

ADDITIONAL NOTES

UNI claimed victory number 4 over the Phoenix with the 71-56 final score. They move to 2-0 on the season and 4-8 all-time against Green Bay.
Maya McDermott moved to no. 9 on UNI’s all-time scoring list passing Katie Miller’s (1999-03) 1,343 point total.
Taryn Wharton tied her career high with 16 points.
With four blocks, Ryley Goebel moved top no. 10 on UNI’s all-time blocks list, tying Hannah Schonhardt (2012-17) with 90 career blocks. The four blocks in a game ties Goebel’s career high for the sixth time.
