John Charles Scharlau, 64, formerly of Mason City, passed away on Monday, September 2, 2024 at Manly Specialty Care.
John was born on August 7, 1960 in Mason City to Lynn and Alice (Ashford) Scharlau. He attended Mason City schools and graduated in 1978 from Mason City High School. On May 21, 1983, he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Tina (Bitker) Scharlau until her passing in 2012.
John worked as a plumber for Clausen Plumbing and Heating for over 35 years. He was very knowledgeable and experienced, teaching classes for the local Plumbers & Steamfitters Unions’ apprenticeship training. John was always helping others with home or vehicle repairs.
John enjoyed riding his bike, tinkering with computers and playing cards. Although he was generally a quiet person, John could also be very opinionated, talking at length about subjects he was interested in. He enjoyed watching movies and could recall everything that happened during the film in detail.
Those left to cherish his memory include his three children: Brian (JoAnn) Scharlau, Brent Scharlau and Brandon Scharlau; grandchildren: Jacob Scharlau and Freya Scharlau; father, Lynn Scharlau and sister, Kay Staley, as well as his niece, nephew, extended family, and many friends.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Tina Scharlau and mother, Alice Scharlau.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
