Dorothy Brocka, 95, formerly of Bristow, passed away Saturday, July 20, 2024, at Unity Point St. Lukes Hospital, Cedar Rapids. Visitation will be held 1:00 – 2:30 pm, Wednesday, July 24, at Woodley Funeral Home, Dumont. Family graveside service will be held at Dumont Cemetery.
Dorothy Janet Brocka was born August 8, 1928, at Shell Rock, a daughter of Pete and Dena (Eckhoff) Groen. At a young age her mother died, and the 12 children were sent to live in foster homes. She was raised by Anna and Art Robinson. She graduated Shell Rock High School and then taught in country schools until her marriage.
Dorothy was united in marriage with Melvin Brocka in 1946 at St. John Lutheran Church, Vilmar. Most of their married lives they lived in the Bristow area. She stayed home raising 6 children as a devoted mother. Later in life she worked as a CNA at nursing homes in Greene, Allison and Dumont until retiring.
A devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother Dorothy loved being with her family, cooking family dinners and playing solitaire.
Dorothy is survived by her children: Merlyn Brocka, Bristow; Dennis (Marilyn) Brocka, Dumont; Mary (Dean) Peterson, Dumont; Cindy (Daryl) Norman, Hansell; son-in-law: Ben Buresh, Ely; 19 grandchildren; 36 great grandchildren; 5 great great-grandchildren with 2 arriving soon; sister Ethel Buskohl, Reinbeck and friends and extended family.
Preceding her in death are her parents, her husband; daughter Ranae Buresh; son Craig; son Jack in infancy; granddaughter Megan Brocka; sisters Ruth, Ione, Marlys, Beulah; brothers: Wilbur, Arthur, Irvin, Raymond, Marvin and Bernard.
