CHARLES CITY – A moldy, vacated and abandoned former nursing home in Charles City was on fire Friday morning, and firefighters cleared the strutted and doused the blaze.
According to the Charles City fire department, early Friday morning, March 23, at 4: 19 AM, “we received call for flames showing from one of the windows at the old Cedar Health building. On arrival crews were able to make entry from a side door immediately adjacent to the room that had previously had flames coming from it. After thoroughly saturating the room a search was performed to ensure the remaining rooms were not impacted. Once all rooms were cleared crews were able to return to quarters. We spent ~1.5 hours on scene and about an hour for clean up. Thank you to our mutual aid partners of Floyd and Colwell who always show up when we call for help.”
The Cedar Health nursing home has been closed for years and residents don’t seem to think it serves a purpose any longer.
“They let it fill up with mold snd decay. So it needs to be demolished,” one long-time resident told NIT.
