Police identify Fort Dodge man that attacked them with knives and was shot dead

FORT DODGE - The identity of the young man that allegedly attacked police with knives this weekend and then was shot dead has been released.

FORT DODGE – The identity of the young man that allegedly attacked police with knives this weekend and then was shot dead has been released.

Fort Dodge police say the deceased male from the officer involved shooting that took place early Saturday morning is identified as 24‐year‐old Tyler C. Stansberry of Fort Dodge.  Officers entered a residence and encountered a male subject now known as Stansberry, armed with two knives that ran at the officers. As a result, an officer on scene discharged his firearm resulting in the death of the individual.

According to an obituary:

Tyler is survived by his mother, Christine Stansberry of Fort Dodge; brother, Tristan Stansberry (Amariauna Mallinger) of Fort Dodge, aunt, Lori Ann Mentzer and her daughter, Hailey Jo; uncle, Chris Collins; aunt, Samantha Jo Stansberry (Gene Harty) and their children, Galaxy Jo (Devon Michalek), Harmony Starbuck, and Yazmine Harty, and Shawn Guggisberg and her son, Brazin Guggisberg and his children Dominic, Ozzy, and Mazzie; stepdad, Mauricio Pineda; many other aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Buzz and Jo Stansberry; aunt, Tonya Collins; and cousin, Jason Ruffridge.

Tyler Christopher Stansberry was born April 9, 1999 in Clarion. He attended preschool in Clarion and then the family moved to Fort Dodge. He attended area schools and graduated from Fort Dodge Senior High School in 2018. He worked for Applebees, Dominos, and WalMart. He enjoyed playing video games and watching movies. He spent a great deal of time with his family. He loved the ocean and listening to music, working out and making rap music. Tyler had a dry sense of humor that will be truly missed. His memory will be cherished by his family and all who knew him.

The Officers involved in the Officer Involved Shooting have been placed on Critical Incident leave while the incident is being investigated by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigations. Per protocol, their names will not be released prior to being interviewed by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigations.

As additional details become available, police say they will provide updates to ensure transparency and communication with the public.

“We appreciate the understanding and support of the community as we navigate through this process,” police further stated.
