Man armed with knives allegedly attacks Fort Dodge police, who shoot him dead

FORT DODGE – An emergency call describing an out of control person who had hurt a dog brought police to a Fort Dodge house, and a deadly encounter unfortunately ensued.

On March 16th, 2024, at approximately 8:40 AM, the Fort Dodge Police Department responded to a distress call at 1525 4th Avenue South in Fort Dodge. Officers were dispatched to the scene where it was reported that an individual within the residence was exhibiting out of control behavior which allegedly included the injuring of a dog within the residence. Further information was provided through dispatch that it was unknown if the subject was in possession of weapons.

While on scene, officers were made aware that the male subject had an active warrant for violation of probation, original charge domestic abuse. Officers entered the residence and encountered a male subject armed with two knives that ran at the officers. As a result, an officer on scene discharged his firearm resulting in the death of the individual. Subsequently, external agencies including the Webster County Sheriff’s Office, the Iowa State Patrol, the Webster County Attorney’s Office, and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigations were notified and responded promptly. Per standard protocol, the Iowa DCI will lead the investigation into this incident, with FDPD cooperating to ensure adherence to all laws, policies, and procedures.

Out of respect for the ongoing investigation and the privacy of those involved, including the deceased individual and the officers, their names are not being disclosed at this time.

The Fort Dodge Police Department released a statement after this incident, saying they “acknowledge the gravity of this incident and recognizes its impact on the community. We extend our deepest sympathies to all affected parties during this difficult time. We reaffirm our commitment to transparency and accountability in all of our actions.
