Rockwell auto crash investigation leads to drunk driving charge

ROCKWELL – A Nora Springs man took his blue Dodge Dart on a destructive adventure through Rockwell, leading to his eventual arrest for drunk driving.

Rockwell police say the incident took place on February 20, 2024. At approximately 3:16 PM that day, the Rockwell Police Department responded to a report of a single vehicle rollover on Madison Street near Hefty Seed. The driver of a 2016 blue Dodge Dart MT, 65-year-old Douglas Schmidt of Nora Springs, was traveling westbound on 1506h Street / Madison Street when the vehicle crossed over the center line into the south ditch. Schmidt traveled through the ditch for less than a quarter of a mile, catching a guide wire connecting to a telephone pole, rolling the car on the driver’s side, before coming to a stop. Asa result of the crash, Schmidt was seen by Rockwell-Swaledale EMTS and Mason City Fire Medics and released.

The accident remained under investigation with the Rockwell Police Department.

Then, on March 7, 2024, Schmidt was charged with fail to maintain control and first-offense operating while intoxicated.
