Marilu H. Wohlers, 86, of Charles City, Iowa, died the evening of Monday, February 19, 2024 at home peacefully in her sleep.
Visitation will be held at Hauser Weishaar Funeral Home from 5-7:00 PM on Friday, March 1, 2024.
There will be a memorial service at 11:00 AM Saturday, March 2, 2024 at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City, Iowa followed by a luncheon in the parish hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the National 19th Amendment Society, the Charles City Arts Center, or the charity of your choice.
Marilu was born in Davenport, Iowa, on February 28, 1937, to Virginia (Banks) Hetzer and Ralph Hetzer. She grew up in Tipton, Iowa and attended Iowa State Teachers College (now known as UNI), where she obtained her Bachelor of Arts in 1959. In 1960, Marilu married William âBillâ Wohlers, whom she met while attending college. They moved to Charles City in 1961 and started a family. While (and after) raising their family and growing their family business, Marilu and Bill travelled extensively across the United States and abroad.
Marilu had an array of accomplishments. Throughout her life, she was active in many community organizations. She was most proud of her work in advancing and preserving womenâs rights. She spent several years as a board member and president of the National 19th Amendment Society, through which she was very involved with the Carrie Chapman Catt House. She was also involved with the American Association of University Women (AAUW), the League of Women Voters, and the PEO Sisterhood. Attending all of her childrenâs and grandchildrenâs activities was also very special to her.
She is survived by her children: Bill (Barbara) Wohlers, Sue Ellen Wohlers, and Tom (Jen) Wohlers; her grandchildren: Lauren (David) Chaplinski, Gabe Wohlers, Hannah Wohlers, Alex Wohlers, and Averi Wohlers; and siblings: Bob Hetzer and Sara Jones.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 59 years; and her sister, Suzie Sharp.
