Women’s College Basketball: UNI rolls over Southern Illinois, 74-51

CEDAR FALLS – UNI women’s basketball welcomed the Southern Illinois Salukis into the McLeod Center on Thursday night for the Panthers’ annual Pink Out. Northern Iowa dominated from tip to final buzzer in the 74-51 victory.

The Salukis netted the first basket of the game before the Panthers rattled off 13 straight points which included a pair of three-pointers. Southern Illinois ended the Panther run with back-to-back layups and a free throw to cut into the Panther lead. UNI led by six points at 13-7 heading into the first media timeout.

Out of the media timeout, Kayba Laube hit a three-pointer which was answered with an SIU three to end the first quarter with a score of 16-10 in favor of the Panthers.

The second quarter opened with back-and-forth baskets before UNI went on a seven-point run to take a 30-18 lead just before the second-quarter media timeout. A 9-4 run from the Panthers out of the media timeout gave them a 15-point lead before the halftime break.

Maya McDermott opened the second half with four points, including technical free throws, before back-to-back three-pointers from Laube saw the Panther lead inflate to 25 points at 49-24. Five more Panther points were scored before the Salukis scored their first basket of the third quarter with just under three minutes remaining in the frame. SIU capped the third quarter with a three-pointer and cut into the Panther lead into the final frame.

SIU opened the fourth quarter on a 5-2 run before Grace Boffeli picked up four points of her own. Kayba Laube recorded back-to-back baskets including a putback layup and a three-pointer to push the Panthers back out by 28 points at 71-43. Ellie Foster was the final Panther to record a point against the Salukis on Thursday night with a three-pointer.

Kayba Laube led the Panthers with 23 points. She added nine rebounds to her total. Grace Boffeli and Maya McDermott were the other lone Panthers to record double digits with 14 and 13 points respectively. Boffeli added 10 rebounds and a block to the mix. McDermott assisted on six baskets against the Salukis.

ADDITIONAL NOTES

UNI won its 49th game against the Salukis and now has a record of 49-35 against Southern Illinois.
Maya McDermott knocked down three free throws. She remains perfect in conference play from the stripe (38-of-38) as well as in the McLeod Center (33-for-33). Her 96.7% from the free throw line (59-for-61) is the top mark in the nation.
Boffeli’s 10 rebounds pushed her past Bre Gunnels (2017-22) for the no. 3 spot on UNI’s all-time rebounding list. Her 800 career rebounds are now 82 short of the no. 2 spot occupied by Megan Maahs (2016-21).
Kayba Laube knocked down a career-high seven threes against the Salukis. She also brought down a career-high tying nine boards.

The Panthers head South to take on the Drake Bulldogs on February 25. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT. The game can be streamed on ESPN+ or listened to on the Panther Sports Radio Network.
