The following is a legislative update from State Senator Waylon Brown, representing Iowa Senate District 30 which includes portions of Cerro Gordo, Mitchell, Worth and Floyd counties:

Week 3 saw a heavy load of subcommittee work in all committees. One piece of legislation I am managing is SF 2063.

SF 2063 is a bill that would require the department of inspections, appeals, and licensing to establish a nursing home administrator training pilot program to provide opportunities for individuals pursuing the profession of nursing home administrator, prior to an individual receiving a nursing home administrator license, to obtain on-the-job experience supervised by a licensed nursing home administrator. The idea for this legislation came out of meetings I had with one of my local nursing homes this fall. It is my hope this piece of legislation will help fill the needed positions across the state. Iowans depend on continuity and continuum of care and our rural, small town nursing homes are a vital part of that health care network.

This week we also saw our Rural Volunteer Fire Fighters from across the state in the Capitol. They once again had their chili cook-off contest. One of the teams served cinnamon rolls with their entry. That’s a pretty tough combination to beat. As a former volunteer EMT, I know the vital role our volunteers play across our state. Thank you for all you do for your local communities. It is appreciated and does not go unnoticed.

We also had iJAG students down at the Capitol this week. Although I did not see any students down from my district, I was able to have a great conversation with a group from Carroll.

Friday is a huge day across the State of Iowa. Many young ladies will be competing in Super Regionals across the state to punch their tickets to the Girls State Wrestling Tournament. Girls wrestling is the fastest growing high school sport in Iowa and it’s easy to see why if you attend an event. I will be in Mason City cheering on my daughter and the rest of the Osage team but want to wish all who compete good luck.

I would also like to recognize my clerk, Theresa, this week. Theresa had the opportunity to testify in front of the Unites States Senate Small Business Committee in D.C. this week. The topic covered was business succession. She did a wonderful job and like so many Iowans, wears many “hats” and is always ready to share her story and how policy impacts their family business. Congratulations on a job well done Theresa!

Next week I anticipate a heavy workload of subcommittees and committee work. As always, thank you for the opportunity to serve you.
