Jeanette Rose Behl Armstrong was born at home October 11, 1938 on a farm north of St. Ansgar, Iowa, to Rosaline (Groth) and Paul Behl. She attended Rock 5 country school through the 8th grade and high school in Osage, Iowa. In 1956 she married Verlyn Armstrong at Trinity Lutheran Church in Osage. To this union six children were born: Cindy Townsend (deceased), Kim (Paul) LeMere of Stevens Point, WI, Tracy (Vince) Cesari of Chisholm, MN, Todd Armstrong (Mary Jo Moucha Bowe) of Eau Claire, WI, Quinn Armstrong of Hyannis, NE, and Amy Armstrong of Duluth, MN.
Jeanette spent her adult married life living in Minnesota and Wisconsin, always close to the Twin Cities area. After her and Verlyn divorced, she moved back to Iowa, first to Mason City and later to a farm near St. Ansgar with her friend and companion, Garth Jordan. She attended North Iowa Area Community College as a non-traditional student and graduated at the age of 50. After graduation she worked at NIACC in the Student Learning Center for 17 ½ years and retired in 2007.
Jeanette loved to travel more than anything else and took a memorable trip to Germany accompanied by her four daughters in 2002. She also visited all 50 states, Washington, DC, Canada and Mexico. Her travels stateside were almost always by car and she considered the journey as important as the destination. She loved country music and visited Nashville and Branson numerous times. She was also known for her ability to grow beautiful flowers, trees and shrubbery. Early in life she developed a passion for politics and served as Mitchell County Democratic chair for 7 ½ years until Cindy’s ill health forced her to resign. She loved to read and usually had several books going at the same time.
Those left to mourn her passing are five children, two sisters; Lois Morris of Mason City, IA, Myrna VanMeveren of Madison, SD, 8 grandchildren; Jess and Mary LeMere, Melissa and Clint Ritzer, Joel and Tyler Townsend, Rochelle and Vincent Armstrong, and 4 great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
She was preceded in death by her partner Garth Jordan, her parents, sister Maxine Gunderson, daughter Cindy Townsend, daughter-in-law Nancy Brenner, brothers-in-law Paul Morris, LaVerne Gunderson, Al VanMeveren, many aunts, uncles and cousins.
