College Baseball: Hawkeyes Handle Mississauga in Fall Opener

IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa baseball team opened up its fall campaign with a 25-6 win over the Mississauga Tigers in 14 innings on Thursday evening.

IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa baseball team opened up its fall campaign with a 25-6 win over the Mississauga Tigers in 14 innings on Thursday evening.

The Hawkeyes pounded out 21 hits, registering 14 extra base hits with three home runs. Senior Michael Seegers had three hits, including a home run, and a team-high three RBIs. Sophomore Blake Guerin and junior Connor Hennings (3 RBIs) also cleared the outfield wall on Thursday evening with home run blasts. Sophomore Gable Mitchell matched Seegers with three hits of his own, while freshman Jaixen Frost, redshirt sophomore Coy Sarsfield and sophomore Kellen Strohmeyer put together multi-hit performances.

Iowa’s pitching staff struck out 27 Mississauga hitters and held the Tigers scoreless through seven innings. Junior Brody Brecht started the game on the mound for the Hawkeyes, striking out two batters in his lone inning of work. Junior Marcus Morgan, sophomore Cade Obermueller, junior Jack Whitlock, redshirt senior Ben DeTaeye, and redshirt junior Zach Voelker all registered three-up, three-down innings. Whitlock and DeTaeye struck out the side in their outings, while freshman Elliot Cadieux-Lanoue also matched the team-high with three strikeouts.

Up Next: Iowa’s fall season continues on Friday, September 29, when the Hawkeyes host Madison College at Duane Banks Field. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. and admission is free.
