UTV crash outside Rockford injures man and child

RURAL CERRO GORDO COUNTY - A UTV crashed into the side of a turning car in rural Cerro Gordo county yesterday, sending a man and a child to a Mason City hospital.

RURAL CERRO GORDO COUNTY – A UTV crashed into the side of a turning car in rural Cerro Gordo county yesterday, sending a man and a child to a Mason City hospital.

On September 4, 2023, at approximately 6:40 PM, Cerro Gordo county sheriff’s deputies responded to a two-vehicle personal injury collision at the intersection of 150th Street and Zinna Avenue near Dougherty, Iowa. A red 2008 Honda Fit being driven by 31-year-old Jessie Sue Bichel of Appleton, Wisconsin, was southbound on Zinna Avenue and upon making a right turn into a field drive to turn around, the vehicle was struck on the passenger side by a red 2014 Polaris Ranger 900XP UTV which was trying to pass the turning vehicle on the wrong side of the road. The Polaris Ranger 900XP UTV driven by 38-year-old Cody Alan Baxter of Dougherty, Iowa, and passenger 9-year-old Berrick Vincent Baxter also of Dougherty were both injured in the collision and taken to Mercy One by private vehicle.

After investigation, the driver of the Polaris Ranger was cited for failure to maintain or use a safety belt.

The Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Rockwell EMS.
