Iowa man who participated in robbery and murder of Waterloo gas station attendant dies in prison

IOWA CITY – An Iowa man who participated in a Waterloo gas station robbery in which the attendant was shot and killed has died in prison.

IOWA CITY – An Iowa man who participated in a Waterloo gas station robbery in which the attendant was shot and killed has died in prison.

Duane E. Brant (pictured, above) was pronounced dead due to natural causes at 2:56 a.m. on Sunday, August 20, 2023 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Brant was 66 years old at the time of his death.

According to records, in 1976, Duane E. Brant and LeRoy Rand, while riding in Brant’s car, decided to rob the attendant at a Quik Trip store. Brant drove to the store, Rand took defendant’s shotgun and entered the store to hold up the attendant, Rand shot and killed the attendant in the course of the robbery, Brant panicked and drove away, Rand later rejoined Brant, and the two split about $100 which the robbery netted and also retrieved the shotgun.

Brant had been serving a maximum 125-year term for the crime of Murder 1st Degree from Black Hawk County. His sentence began on February 3, 1977.
