Kathryn “Katie” Lucille Lindsay 95, passed away Tuesday, April 18, 2023, at MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center, Mason City.

Kathryn “Katie” Lucille Lindsay 95, passed away Tuesday, April 18, 2023, at MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center, Mason City.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, April 27, 2023, at the Clear Lake United Methodist Church, 508 2nd Ave. North, Clear Lake, with Rev. Sylvester Holima officiating. Inurnment will take place in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, Iowa, later date. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.

Memorials may be directed to the Clear Lake Methodist Church or Planned Parenthood Action Fund in Katie’s memory.
Kathryn Buffington was born on December 18, 1927, the daughter of Chet and Nettie (Chamberlin) Buffington, Mason City, Iowa. She attended Madison Elementary School, Roosevelt Jr. High School and graduated from Mason City High School in the class of 1945.

Katie married her high school sweetheart, Gerald “Jerry” Lindsay on October 5, 1946, at the First Methodist Church, Mason City. They were blessed with six children: Tom, Gary, Susan, Sally, Jay, and John. In 1959, they built a home in Clear Lake and resided there until their children were raised, then lived elsewhere in Clear Lake.

Besides being very busy raising her children Katie found time to be a Den mother, Brownie leader, Girl Scout leader and served on the Clear Lake Planning & Zoning Committee for 8 years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and Miriam Circle serving various committees in the church.

Katie enjoyed playing golf and was a member of the Clear Lake Women’s Golf Assoc. She and Jerry played in many Husband/Wife Tournaments around the area. She also enjoyed playing Bridge with her friends. Her greatest joy was time spent at home cooking, baking, sewing, and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

After her family was grown, she got to visit several job sites around the country where Jerry was working. They spent 5 months in Oahu, Hawaii in 1980, where they saw the Hawaiian culture firsthand, played golf courses, the truly enjoyed the beauty.

After Jerry retired, they bought a travel trailer to visit Alaska in 1996, spending the whole summer on the trip. It also enabled them to spend winters in Arizona and be with their family there.

Katie is preceded in death by her husband Gerald “Jerry”; five brothers Raymond, Gaylord, Howard, Clyde and Stanley; four sisters Nellie (in infancy), Geneva Anderson, Myrna Mondt and Josephine Kay; her son Jay Lindsay; grandson, Jeffrey Whitehill and daughter-in-law Linda Lindsay.

Survivors include her children Tom (Fran) Lindsay, Lansing, IA, Gary Lindsay, Cedar Rapids, IA, Sue (Gary) Brown, Mesa, AZ; Sally (Ron) Clay, Mason City, John Lindsay, Mason City; 14 grandchildren Michelle Dunn, Denise Hall, Gerry (Lori) Lindsay, Robert Lindsay, Julie Lindsay (Kevin Drisko), Nathan (Alishia) Lindsay, John (Lisa) Locke, Katie Locke, James Whitehill, Jared (Dana) Whitehill, Jody (Greg) Falls, Holly (Justin) Platts, Max and Nicholas Lindsay; 20 Great-Grandchildren and 3 Great-Great-Grandchildren; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
