Iowa man arrested on serious charges after bicyclist hit by car and left on the road

WEST DES MOINES - An Iowa man was arrested on serious charges after he allegedly hit a bicyclist with his car while under the influence and left on the scene.

WEST DES MOINES – An Iowa man was arrested on serious charges after he allegedly hit a bicyclist with his car while under the influence and left on the scene.

On Sunday, October 16th, 2022, at approximately 2:14am, the West Des Moines Police Department responded to reports of an injured male in the 5200 block of Ashworth Road. When officers and paramedics arrived, it was determined the pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle that was no longer at the scene. The injured male was identified as Lonny Kirschbaum, 49, of Lucas, Iowa. Kirschbaum was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries. The West Des Moines Police Traffic Unit with the assistance of West Des Moines Detectives began an immediate investigation into the incident. Kirschbaum received continued medical treatment and did survive the incident.

On Tuesday, February 28th, West Des Moines Police completed a nearly 4-month long investigation, and at approximately 10:00am arrested 35-year-old Zaccary Sandvig of West Des Moines on the following criminal charges:

– Leaving the scene of an accident resulting in serious injury – Aggravated Misdemeanor

– Serious injury by vehicle while under the influence – Class D Felony

– Serious injury by vehicle in a reckless manner – Class D Felony

Sandvig was transported by West Des Moines Police to the Polk County Jail.
