WATERLOO – A Waterloo mother was arrested after her baby ingested and was doused in Drano cleaner, suffering severe burns and life-flighted to a hospital.
On January 5, 2023, at approximately 8:45 PM, officers and Waterloo Fire Rescue were dispatched to 1222 Lincoln Street for a medical emergency. Officers were informed that a 1-year-old was having trouble breathing and suffering from burns. Officers and para medics on scene discovered that baby had ingested Drano cleaner and was also saturated in the liquid as well.
The child was rushed to Allen Hospital and later life flighted to University of Iowa Hospitals due to severe burns and internal injuries. Officers were on scene with the mother of the child, identified as Kayla Tiefel, age 24. Officers observed narcotics baggies and razer blades in plain view in the residence. The baggies contained suspected methamphetamine.
Tiefel was later charged with child endangerment (meth exposure), neglect of a dependent person and possession of a controlled substance.
