Women’s College Basketball: #22 Iowa State beat Baylor in double overtime, 81-77

WACO, TEXAS– No. 22 Iowa State (17-7, 9-5 Big 12) ended victorious in the 81-77 double-overtime thriller over Baylor (16-10, 7-7 Big 12) Saturday night.

ISU hit seven 3-pointers in the second half to aid in pushing the game to overtime. With the mark, Iowa State passed 200 3-pointers on the season with 11 in the contest, a milestone the Cyclones have hit for 21 consecutive seasons.

Ashley Joens now holds the second-most career points in Big 12 history as the senior passed Oklahoma State’s Andrea Riley’s mark of 2,835 set from 2007-10. Joens led the game with a commanding 27 points to now hold 2,860. All ISU’s starters ended in double figures: Lexi Donarski (16), Denae Fritz (12), Emily Ryan (10) and Nyamer Diew (10).

How it Happened

Ryan and Fritz hit back-to-back 3-pointers in the midst of an 8-0 run to begin ahead 8-2. Donarski then ended a scoring drought with ISU’s third trey to hold the lead at 13-8. At the buzzer, Baylor stole the ball and knocked down a triple to pull within one at 13-12.

With the clock at 7:28 in the second frame, Diew drained another from deep for the Cyclones to put the score at 16-12. Baylor followed to take an 11-0 run to retake the lead at 25-20. At the half, the Bears held the three-point edge of 25-22.

The Cyclones opened the half tying up the contest as Fritz drained her second triple. Ryan followed to also notch her second shot beyond the arc to lead Baylor by one at 28-27. The Bears flipped the lead back to their favor and held it until less than a minute remained in the third. With 21 seconds to go, Diew hit double figures on her second triple as ISU stormed back on a 7-0 run to go up 41-40. Baylor then hit a free throw to knot things up at 41 into the final quarter.

The game remained within one point at the final media timeout, 51-50 Baylor. The lead flipped four times after the break before Fritz kept ISU in it with her third trey to level the contest once again at 59 with 1:20 to go. The score remained at 59-59 as the clock hit zero to send the game to overtime.

Joens opened scoring in OT with a layup and brought in the Cyclone’s next two field goals to keep within one point of the Bears at 67-66. Baylor then went up by three before Donarski drained a crucial trey, the 10th for ISU, to tie it up 71-71. Baylor missed a 3-pointer as time expired to head into the second overtime period.

Donarski nailed the jumper to go up 73-71 at the 3:25 mark before Joens extended the lead to five with a triple. Baylor came back to trim the lead to 78-77 with 10 seconds on the clock. Joens then drew the foul and proceeded to hit her free throws to bring in the three-point lead. After another foul, Joens made another for an 81-77 score to end the battle ahead.

Players of the Game

Ashley Joens led all players with 27 points, with eight coming from the fourth quarter to extend the game. Joens hit crucial free throws, totaling 11, while notching her 10th double-double this season with 11 rebounds. Joens also had four assists and two steals in the victory.

Emily Ryan also had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds to mark the 10th of her career. Ryan added five assists, two steals and a block to her stat line.
