Matthew Eric Schmidt, son of Ronald and Debra (Short) Schmidt, was born December 9, 1980, at MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center in Mason City. He attended Exceptional Opportunities in Burt and graduated in 2002. He then moved to Opportunity Village in Clear Lake on April 1, 2005 residing there until June 16, 2021. Matt spent the remainder of 2021 in the hospital or a nursing home for care. On September 30, 2022, Matt moved to the Sheffield Care Center located in Sheffield, Iowa.

Matt enjoyed being outside with nature and being with his family. He rooted for the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Iowa State Cyclones. Music brought him much happiness. Matt tapped his hand to the beat while taking countless wheelchair strolls as music played from a cell phone. Shania Twain, Fleetwood Mac, and Chicago were some of his favorite musicians. He loved holding a small vibrating ball up to his ears to feel the vibration. He loved the movie Sing 2 and never tired of watching the movie. Matt loved to hold hands with anyone. You could find him sitting in his wheelchair at the nurses’ station, holding their hand while they worked on their paperwork.

Matt was truly a ‘gift of God’ who taught us about what was really important in life, to be thoughtful, compassionate, caring and loving to all. Matt will be forever in our hearts.
