WEST DES MOINES – A man was viciously mauled by two large pit bulls in a Des Moines suburb today, and he may not survive the attack.

On Thursday, December 8 at approximately 4:05 PM, West Des Moines Police were dispatched to 5101 Hawthorne Drive (Fountains Apartment Complex) for a report of two large pit bulls actively attacking a person in front of the complex office building.

When officers arrived on scene, they witnessed an adult male victim, unconscious, and still being viciously attacked by the dogs. The dogs failed to retreat or end the attack when officers approached to provide medical aid to the victim. The dogs continued their serious attack and officers were forced to put one of the dogs down. The second dog ran from the scene and after an extensive search, was eventually located and contained.

Officers began immediate life-saving measures on the injured male. The victim has been identified as a 27-year-old adult male and has been transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

West Des Moines Police Detectives are actively investigating the incident.
