College Wrestling: UNI competes at Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — The Panthers put in the work with 7 wins over top-25 opponents to wrap up 5th place as a team at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite. Five UNI wrestlers earned a spot on the podium, with finishing as runners-up in the final day of competition on Saturday.

DAY TWO

The marquee matchup of the weekend saw Parker Keckeisen, ranked second in the nation at 184 pounds, face No. 3 Trent Hidlay of North Carolina State. Keckeisen reached Saturday’s championship bout after an 11-2 major decision win over Nebraska’s Leny Pinto, before falling to Hidlay in an 8-2 decision.

Cael Happel took second place at 141 pounds after falling to No. 17 Brock Hardy of Nebraska, 6-1. Happel picked up a 4-1 victory in his semifinal bout with No. 16 Clay Carlson of South Dakota State.

Despite a tough second match on Friday, Kyle Biscoglia (133 pounds) rebounded with four consecutive wins over top-25 competition to finish in 3rd place. The redshirt junior edged No. 7 Chris Cannon (Northwestern) in a 9-2 decision before defeating No. 6 Dylan Ragusin of Michigan in a tight 6-5 victory. Biscoglia clinched 3rd place following a medical forfeit by No. 22 Jason Schaner of Oregon State.

Tyrell Gordon (285 pounds) battled his way to fifth place finishing the night with a victory against No. 14 AJ Nevills of South Dakota State, 3-1, while Austin Yant (165 pounds) took home 6th place.

DAY ONE

Happel, Yant and Keckeisen each cruised into their respective semifinals in convincing fashion.

Biscoglia landed UNI’s lone fall of the day in his opening match, as he looked to advance through the consolation bracket. Gordon also continued in the consolation bracket in the 285-pound bracket, headlined by a top-10 win over No. 7 Tate Orndorff of Ohio State, 3-2.

The Panthers notched 7 major decision wins on the opening day of competition, posting a record of 23-11 in their 34 contested bouts.

UP NEXT

UNI returns to action next Saturday, Dec. 10 as the Panthers host their first home event of the season with the UNI Open inside the UNI-Dome. Competition will begin at 9 a.m. CT.
