College Basketball: Cyclones down IUPUI 88-39 in season opener

AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State (1-0) men’s basketball team opened the 2022-23 campaign Monday night with an 88-39 win over IUPUI (0-1) at Hilton Coliseum.

AMES – The Iowa State (1-0) men’s basketball team opened the 2022-23 campaign Monday night with an 88-39 win over IUPUI (0-1) at Hilton Coliseum.

Three Cyclones finished the night in double figures. Jaren Holmes led the way in his ISU debut with 23 points, Gabe Kalscheur tallied 16 and Osun Osunniyi scored 10 of his own.

On the defensive end, Iowa State forced 29 Jaguar turnovers, outrebounded IUPUI 41-25, recorded 15 steals and blocked four shots.

How it Happened
At the under-16 minute timeout in the first half, the Cyclones and Jaguars were tied at nine. Following the break, Iowa State went on a 14-3 run to extend its lead 23-12. In the final eight minutes of the half, ISU outscored IUPUI 22-10 to close out the half. Iowa State led 45-22 at the break. Defensively in the first half, the Cyclones forced 16 turnovers, recording 11 steals and three blocks in the first 20 minutes of play.
To begin the second half, IUPUI went on a 6-0 run before Iowa State responded. Iowa State scored six quick points to extend their lead back to 23 with just over 14 minutes left. In the final 13 minutes of play, the Cyclones closed out the Jaguars with a 35-7 run.

Top Performance
In his Iowa State debut, Jaren Holmes led all scorers with 23 points. Holmes ended the night shooting 50 percent (8-of-16) from the field and added four rebounds and two assists.
