At the age of one, the family moved to Sabetha, Kansas, where Phyllis attended school, graduating from Sabetha High School in 1947. Following high school, she worked at Farmers State Bank in Sabetha. On February 19, 1950, Phyllis married Alvin Banwart in Sabetha, Kansas. On September 6, 1954, Phyllis and Alvin were baptized and became members of the Apostolic Christian Church of West Bend.

The couple farmed and raised their family in the Rodman and West Bend areas. In 1987 they moved to West Bend and in 1992 they moved to the Apostolic Christian Retirement Village. While Alvin was living, they spent many winters in Zapata, Texas, and were blessed with the fellowship of many friends. In 2021 Phyllis moved to Prairie Creek Assisted Living in West Bend.
