Minnesota woman arrested on numerous charges after crimes in Estherville

ESTHERVILLE – A Minnesota woman was arrested on numerous charges after crimes in Estherville.

On Monday, August 8, 2022, at 8:11 p.m. the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office was asked for assistance from the Estherville Police Department in regards to a theft of items from a convenience store in Estherville.  At approximately 8:22 p.m. a Palo Alto County Deputy observed a 2010 Jeep Patriot traveling east, which was a vehicle matching the description of the suspect vehicle.  The deputy got behind the Jeep Patriot in the 3800 Block of Highway 18 and attempted to initiate a traffic stop on the vehicle.  The driver of the Jeep Patriot did not immediately stop  and continued toward Ruthven.  The deputy continued to pursue the Jeep Patriot until it eventually did stop on the side of the roadway just east of Ruthven.

As the deputy exited his patrol vehicle, the suspect vehicle took off and the driver would end up driving recklessly through several yards within the city limits of Ruthven.  As the deputy continued to pursue the Jeep Patriot, the driver pulled back onto Highway 18 and headed east.  The suspect driver and vehicle drove east of Ruthven as the deputy continued to pursue.  While following the suspect vehicle, the driver turned the Jeep Patriot around and headed back west towards Ruthven.  As the pursuit was re-entering the city limits of Ruthven, there was a stopped vehicle on the shoulder of the roadway.  It appeared to the deputy, that the driver of the Jeep Patriot was going to intentionally collide with the vehicle that had pulled over.  At this point the deputy felt that for the safety of others, he had to try and stop the Jeep Patriot.  The deputy subsequently drove his patrol vehicle into the rear driver side of the Jeep Patriot.  This caused the Jeep Patriot to drive into the north ditch.  The vehicle would eventually come to stop at the intersection of Haugen Street and Old Highway #18.  The female driver exited the Jeep Patriot and attempted to get into a motorist’s vehicle which was stopped at the intersection.  As the deputy attempted to take the female subject into custody, she began to resist and would end up assaulting the deputy.

Following an investigation into the incident, the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office arrested 34-year-old Sierra Nicole Day of Nevis, Minnesota for Eluding, a Class D Felony, Possession of Controlled Substance With the Intent to Deliver, a Class C felony, Failure to Affix Drug Tax Stamp, a class D felony, Possession of Marijuana 2nd Offense, a Serious Misdemeanor, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, a Simple Misdemeanor, Attempted Burglary 3rd Degree, a Serious Misdemeanor, Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations, an Aggravated Misdemeanor, Interference With Official Acts, a Serious Misdemeanor, Reckless Driving, a Simple Misdemeanor, Speeding, a Simple Misdemeanor, Failure to Obey Stop Sign, a Simple Misdemeanor, and Driving On Wrong Side of Two-Way Highway, a Simple Misdemeanor,   Items were seized from the vehicle in connection with the theft in Estherville.  Estherville Police Department will be filing additional charges for the theft.

Following her arrest, the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office requested a search warrant and items were also seized in connection with a burglary that occurred in Minnehaha County, South Dakota on August 8, 2022.

No injuries were reported as a result of the vehicle collision.

Assisting the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office was the Ruthven Ambulance Service, Iowa State Patrol, Emmetsburg Police Department, and Wickman Towing.
