Possible drunk driver wreaks havoc in Fort Dodge, launches vehicle into house, lands in living room

FORT DODGE – A possible drunk driver wreaked havoc in Fort Dodge, launching their vehicle into a house and landing in the living room.

On Saturday, May 21 at approximately 2:05 AM, a patrol officer on routine patrol was nearly struck by a black sedan while the officer was stopped at the intersection of 1st Avenue South and South 17th Street. The officer observed the black sedan to have significant front‐end damage. Another vehicle was following the black sedan and pulled alongside the officer, informing them the black sedan had just struck their vehicle and was attempting to flee.

The officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a 2015 Toyota Camry, but the driver refused to stop. The driver continued to flee at a high rate of speed. The vehicle began travelling northbound on North 20th Street, where they came to the intersection of 6th Avenue North and North 20th Street, which is a t‐intersection. The driver failed to negotiate the turn, driving into the front yard of 1928 6th Avenue North, which launched the vehicle into the residence, landing in the living room and causing significant damage to the structure.

Officers quickly removed the driver and passenger of the vehicle as well as the occupants of the residence. Luckily, no one in the residence was hurt as a result. The driver of the sedan was transported to Unity Point – Trinity Regional Medical Center for treatment of their injuries, while the passenger was treated on scene.

The Fort Dodge Police Department is conducting an operating while intoxicated investigation into this incident, along with any additional charges that may be applicable. At this time, charges are pending in this case. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the police department.
