Women’s JUCO Golf: Boerjan leads NIACC women at district tournament

MILFORD, Kan. – Freshman Kirsten Boerjan shot a 90 to lead the NIACC women’s golf team on day one at the NJCAA Plains District Championship on Monday at Rolling Hills Golf Course.

Boerjan, who is from St. Ansgar, sits in a tie for 24th place heading into the second and final day of the district tournament. Hailey Panos shot 96 and is a tie for 26th.

“Kirsten Boerjan continues to play well,” NIACC coach Chris Frenz said. “Hailey Panos had it going pretty good on the front nine until a tough ninth hole.”

The top two teams and all of their individuals as well as three golfers not from the top two placing teams qualify for the national tournament. Teams and individuals who qualify will play at Mayfair Country Club in Sanford, Florida in the NJCAA National Tournament in May.

NIACC is in eighth place with a first round score of 377.

“The team is disappointed that we didn’t score better than we did (Monday),” Frenz said, “but I saw a lot of good things.

“The speed of the greens was difficult. We stilled played pretty well overall, but we just couldn’t score.”

Also for the Trojans, Alyssa Alert shot 94, Ashley Voves shot 101 and Sophie Lunning shot 102.

“Alyssa Alert put together a great start but had a few bumps along the way and did a great job of focusing,” Frenz said. “Our goal (Tuesday) is to do better than (Monday) and hopefully catch Central Wyoming.”

First-round team standings – Iowa Western 317, Dodge City CC 327, Barton County CC 339, DMACC 349, Iowa Lakes 355, Fort Scott CC 359, Central Wyoming 364, NIACC 377.
