Lloyd James “Jim” Hughes, age 94, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday, March 25, 2022, at the Riceville Family Care and Therapy Center in Riceville, Iowa.
Lloyd James Hughes was born on October 7, 1927, to John and Grace (Marr) Hughes. He was the youngest of four children, growing up in the Riceville area with his siblings: Cyrus, Francis and Helen. He attended school and graduated from Riceville High School in 1944.
Jim met the love of his life, Fern Havig, while at a bowling alley in Osage, Iowa. They were married on September 30, 1948. To this union six children were born: Daniel, Richard, Michael, Debra, Mary Jo and Dean.
Together they made their home in Riceville where Jim was a farmer, owned a men’s and boy’s clothing store and later retired from the Iowa Department of Revenue, where he was an auditor. Jim had many jobs over the years, and was always ready to lend a hand to anyone that needed it.
In his retirement, he enjoyed many hobbies including: wood working, vegetable and flower gardening, fishing and travel. Jim and Fern also enjoyed spending a couple months each winter in Mississippi. His daily walk around the town was definitely something he treasured as he met people along the way. But most precious of all was his time spent with his family.
He will be deeply missed by his wife of 73 years, Fern, his children: Dan (Diane), Dick (Patty), Mike (Karen), Debbie, Mary Jo “Joey” (Tom) Crorkin and Dean (Jackie), nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents and his siblings.
Many thanks for the wonderful care and love that Jim received during his stay at the Riceville Family Care and Therapy Center. We truly feel blessed to have had such caring staff be part of his life during his final years.
