Burning, stolen vehicle leads to arrest of Northern Iowa couple

SAC COUNTY, IOWA – A burning, stolen vehicle led to the arrest of a Northern Iowa couple.

On February 16, 2022, at 5:17 AM, the Lytton Fire Department and Sac County Sheriff’s Office responded to an abandoned car on fire ½ mile south of Lytton, Iowa. When firefighters arrived, they found a 2005 Chevy Trailblazer engulfed in flames, on 260th Street about a quarter mile west of N-28. No one was around the burning SUV. Law enforcement was able to locate the owner of the SUV at their home in Lytton. It was learned that the SUV had been stolen. The owner reported that there had been a handgun in the SUV. Investigators searched the burned-out SUV for signs of a firearm but were unsuccessful. The owner had the serial number and provided it.

Morning of February 17, 2022, sheriff’s officials responded to 215 Oak Ave., Lytton on a domestic dispute in progress. Upon arrival, law enforcement encountered 28-year-old Casey Herrig and 26-year-old Rae Beth Horton in the basement. Horton was wanted out of Cerro Gordo County, Iowa on escape charges and Herrig had traffic warrants out of Sac County. Both were arrested. During the subsequent investigation, it was determined that Herrig possessed a handgun, and was a convicted felon. A handgun was recovered from the basement of 215 Oak Ave., Lytton and was identified as the missing handgun from the burnt SUV the day before.

February 23, 2022, Sheriff’s officials arrested 28-year-old Casey Herrig from 215 Oak Ave., Lytton, Iowa. Herrig was located at 215 N. 4th Ave., in Nemaha, Iowa. Herrig has been charged with theft 2nd degree a class “D” felony, arson 2nd degree a class “C” felony and felon in possession of a firearm a class “D” felony. Herrig admitted to law enforcement taking the SUV, starting it on fire and taking the handgun. He has been booked in the Sac County jail on a $20,000.00 bond.
