CEDAR FALLS – UNI men’s basketball’s AJ Green has been named the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday. It is the third time Green has earned the honor this season after previously earning recognition on Nov. 29 and Dec. 20, 2021, and seventh time in his career.
Green, a junior guard for the Panthers, notched a pair of 20-point performances in the past week, including 21 points in the UNI’s dominating 95-75 win over Missouri State on Sunday. The Cedar Falls native shot 7-of-13 from beyond the arc during the previous week, averaging 20.5 points in helping the Panthers take over sole possession of first place in the league standings with two games to play. Green dished out a season-high 7 assists against the Bears, shot a perfect 8-for-8 at the free throw line, and shot 52% from the field on the week (13-25). After Sunday’s win, Green now leads the MVC with a scoring average of 20.5 points in league only games.
UNI’s seventh-leading scorer all-time, Green is 2 points from passing Indiana State’s Tyreke Key as the MVC’s career scoring leader among active players. Green has also been a consistent shooter at the free throw line, having made 36 consecutive attempts at the charity stripe. He currently holds the 10th best free throw percentage in the nation (90.8%), and sits 4th all-time in MVC history with an 89.6% career mark at the line.
From beyond the three-point arc, Green leads the MVC this season in three-point attempts (201), three-point field goals per game (3.0), total three-pointers made (77).
Green is a 6-foot, 4-inch guard from Cedar Falls, Iowa. He is majoring in movement and exercise science: sport psychology with minors in sport administration and strength and conditioning. He is the son of Kyle and Michele Green. His sister, Emerson, plays on the UNI women’s basketball team.
Green and the Panthers return to action on Feb. 23 as they take on the Indiana State Sycamores at the Hulman Center in Terre Haute. The game can be watched live on ESPN+, or listened to on the Panther Sports Radio Network.
