College Wrestling: No. 18 UNI win streak ends to No. 5 Iowa State, 16-15

CEDAR FALLS – UNI wrestling’s win streak ended with a 16-15 loss to No. 5 Iowa State, the only undefeated team in the Big 12.

No. 18 UNI wrestling slips to 7-6 overall and 6-3 in the Big 12. Iowa State improved to 14-1 and 7-0 in the Big 12.

UNI opened with a win in an extra match with Pat Schoenfelder over Julien Broderson at 174 pounds and kept the momentum for the first two bouts of the scored dual.

Down 2-1 after the first period of the 125-pound match, No. 18 Brody Teske took over in the second period to finish on top, 4-2. He never gave up the lead to knock off his third top-20 opponent in No. 15 Kysen Terukina in a 6-3 decision to give UNI the early 3-0 lead.

No. 25 Kyle Biscoglia notched two take downs and drew two penalty points off stalling over No. 27 Ramazan Attasauov for the 7-2 decision to push the team score to 6-0. Biscoglia has now won nine of his last 10 duals. He has recorded bonus points in 13 of his 17 victories.

At 141 pounds, No. 20 Cael Happel struck first and was able to fend off No. 10 Ian Parker until the third period. Leading 5-2 after an escape, Happel gave up a takedown and back points to be edged out, 9-5.

Iowa State was able to tie up the team score 6-6 with back-to-back wins at 149 pounds. ISU’s No. 19 Jarrett Degen got the 5-2 decision.

The Cyclones got their first lead at 157 pounds with nationally top-ranked David Carr. Derek Holschlag was able to limit bonus points, but Carr took the match 11-4 to give ISU the 9-6 team lead heading into intermission.

UNI’s Austin Yant evened the team score, blanking Isaac Judge, 5-0. Yant has now won eight of his last nine matches at 165 pounds.

At 174 pounds, unranked Lance Runyon notched his third top-20 win in just five matches. He drew a stall penalty to top No. 18 Joel Devine, 1-0. Runyon returned to the lineup late January after suffering an injury in the first round of the Big 12 Championships on March 6, 2021. Runyon’s other top-20 wins include a fall over No. 7 Dustin Plott of Oklahoma State.

No. 4 Parker Keckeisen extended the UNI lead. With a cradle locked up, No. 8 Marcus Coleman was able to roll out and fend off the fall. Keckeisen had to settle for a 7-2 decision at 184 pounds. UNI went up 15-9.

Keckeisen’s only two career losses have come to No. 1 Aaron Brooks of Penn State. He was third in the 184-pound weight class at last year’s NCAA championships as a redshirt freshman. Keckeisesn is on a nine-match win streak that includes six bonus-point wins. He has now faced three top-25 opponents this year, beating No. 9 Dakota Geer (Oklahoma State), by major decision, 12-3, and No. 25 Charles Small of Hofstra, 10-3.

Iowa State’s major decision win at 197 pounds closed the scoring gap, and a decision at heavyweight gave the Cyclones the win.

OTHER PANTHER NOTES
This was the seventh top-25 team UNI has faced this season.
UNI was on a six-dual win streak having knocked off both of last year’s co-champions of the Big 12 Championships.
Believed to be a McLeod dual record, UNI wrestling’s most-attended dual was the first event set in the UNI-Dome Feb. 7, 1976. The Panthers wrestled the University of Iowa in front of 10,214 people.
The UNI vs. ISU dual series is the oldest in Panther tradition, dating back to 1924, the second year UNI had wrestling. The Cyclones lead the series 20-59, with ISU having won the last two duals in 2021 and 2020.
UNI’s head coach Doug Schwab is 4-8 against Iowa State. His longest win streak against the Cyclones was from 2017 to 2019 with three consecutive wins.

UP NEXT
Single-dual tickets are on sale for the final dual set in the McLeod Center against No. 9 Wisconsin on Feb. 17. The Panthers will honor their seniors prior to the dual.
