College Basketball: UNI’s AJ Green earns second MVC Player of the Week honor of the season

CEDAR FALLS – UNI men’s basketball’s AJ Green has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday. It is the second time Green has earned the honor this season after previously earning recognition on Nov. 29.

Green, a junior, led the Panthers in scoring in both of UNI wins last week, including 24 points in a home victory over Jackson State, and a 29-point performance on the road on Saturday at Marshall. With his efforts, Green moved to No. 10 on UNI’s all-time scoring list with 1,354 total points, passing former Panther Kwadzo Ahelegbe. Green’s 29 points at Marshall also marked his 18th career game of 25+ points, and third such game this season.

His eight combined three-pointers in last week’s games moved him past Ben Jacobson, Johnny Moran and Marc Sonnen to second in program history in made three-point career field goals with 205. He joins Jacobson, Moran, Sonnen, and Matt Bohannon as the only players in UNI men’s basketball history to make over 200 three-pointers in their UNI career.

Green currently leads the MVC and ranks 14th in the nation in three-point field goals per game (3.6). He also sits second in the league in points per game (18.7), free throw percentage (.848) and minutes per game (35:11).

Green is a 6-foot, 4-inch guard from Cedar Falls, Iowa. He is majoring in movement and exercise science: sport psychology with minors in sport administration and strength and conditioning. He is the son of Kyle and Michele Green. His sister, Emerson, plays on the UNI women’s basketball team.

Green and the Panthers (4-5) return to action on Dec. 22 as they face the Liberty Flames in the first game of the 2021 Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu at 2 p.m. CT.
