Iowa woman and Colorado man arrested after death of toddler

AMES – An Iowa woman and a Colorado man were arrested after the death of a toddler earlier this year and an extensive police investigation.

On Saturday, April 24, 2021 at 3:24 p.m., City of Ames emergency units from the Ames Fire Department, Mary Greeley Medical Center, and the Ames Police Department responded to the 1200 block of Florida Avenue for a medical call involving a toddler. Responders subsequently requested an air ambulance be called to the scene. The toddler was air-lifted from west Ames to a Des Moines area hospital in critical condition. The toddler died on Sunday, April 25, 2021.

UPDATE: As a result of an extensive and ongoing investigation, the following individuals have been arrested:

• Danielle M. Obrecht, age 26, of Ames, for Child Endangerment Causing Death, a class B felony

• Trevin D. Nicholson, age 25, of Centennial, Colorado, for Murder 1st Degree, a class A felony and Child Endangerment Causing Death, a class B felony

The charges are a result of witness interviews, autopsy results conducted by the Polk County Medical Examiner, and additional forensic evidence. Nicholson was arrested in Douglas County, Colorado on October 12, 2021. He is awaiting extradition to Iowa. Obrecht is being held in the Story County Jail.

The Ames Police Department was assisted in the investigation by United States Marshals Service, Polk County Medical Examiner, Story County Attorney’s Office, and the Iowa Attorney General’s Office.
