OBIT: Opal Severin

Opal Severin, 89, of Charles City, passed away Monday, September 20, 2021 at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 25, 2021 at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City with Pastor Patty Kellogg officiating.

Visitation will be at Hauser Weishaar Funeral Home in Charles City on Saturday, September 25, 2021 from 12:30 p.m. until the start of the graveside at the cemetery. The family asks that those in attendance at the visitation please wear a face mask.

Opal Mae (Hall) Severin, the daughter of Henry and Rachel (Nelson) Hall, was born November 5, 1931 in Colwell, Iowa. She received her education through the Charles City Schools and was united in marriage to Lloyd Severin, Sr. on November 10, 1950 in Charles City. This union was blessed with four children: Bruce, Lloyd, Jr., Ike and Mark.

Opal worked in a nursing home as an aide when her children were young and later as a cook at Washington Elementary School for a number of years. She was a member of the Senior Center (where she enjoyed playing cards) and Heritage Club.

Once Lloyd, Sr. retired she decided she was finished working too so that they could spend some quality time together. They were avid campers and loved listening to Bluegrass, gospel and country music (attending concerts whenever possible). Opal also liked to cook/bake (especially at Christmas time making candies and cookies), tend to her flower garden, watch baseball (she was a huge L.A. Dodgers fan and also watched the Cubs) and spend time with her family who were very important to her.

Living family members include her four children: Bruce (Robbin) Severin, Lloyd, Jr. (Becky) Severin, Ike Severin all of Charles City and Mark (Tracy) Severin of Coon Rapids, Minnesota; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; along with several nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

Opal was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lloyd Severin, Sr.; four brothers: Earl, Claude, Elmer and Johnny; and one sister, Minnie Streich.
