OBIT: Wayne Eugene Vandervort

Wayne Eugene Vandervort, 96, of Clear Lake, died Tuesday, July 20, 2021, at Rockwell Community Nursing Home in Rockwell.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 26, 2021, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 310 1st Ave. N., Clear Lake, with Rev. Al Berge officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery in Dows, IA.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Wayne was born April 15, 1925, the son of Eugene and Josephine (Ingelbretson) Vandervort in Dows. He married Shirlee Madsen on May 30, 1952, at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake. She preceded him in death on October 16, 2010.

A graduate of Dows High School, Wayne was drafted into the United States Navy during World War II and served on a minesweeper for three years until his honorable discharge. He was a transport driver for 24 years and retired from Associated Transport in 1982.

Wayne was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and Evening Lions in Clear Lake. He was an avid flower gardener, fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, loved to dance at the Surf Ballroom and enjoyed coffee time with friends. He also cherished spending winters in Arizona with Shirlee and time with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and family.

Wayne is survived by four children, Dan Vandervort of Anchorage, AK, Gregory (Rosemary) Vandervort of Poway, CA, Ron Vandervort of Dows and Kirsten (Bill) Cunningham of Des Moines; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brother, Glen; and sisters, Mavis Denger and Mertie Vandervort.
