OBIT: Janice “Jan” Barrett

Janice “Jan” Barrett, 79, of Charles City, passed away Sunday, July 4, 2021 at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City.

A celebration of Jan’s life will be held at the Charles City VFW from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, July 9, 2021. A private family inurnment will take place at Sunnyside Memory Gardens in rural Charles City.

Janice Carol Barrett, the daughter of Charles Taft and Marie Richsmann, was born on February 20, 1942 in Iowa City. She graduated from Charles City High School.

Jan was a bartender for many local bars, worked for All State Quality Foods, and was a CMA with Comprehensive Systems for over 30 years. She loved her time with the 9th Street Group Home and the residents had a special place in her heart.

Jan enjoyed playing cards, bingo, and going to the casinos. She also enjoyed attending the fair each year. Jan’s greatest joy in her life was her family. She loved all of their family gatherings and spending the holidays together, especially Christmas with her grandchildren.

Living family members include her sister, Colleen (Duane) Ortmayer of Charles City; brother, Jerry Waterman of Florida; children: Deb (John) Danko, Rhonda (Phil) Neely, Jake (Lori) Kummer, Carla Kummer, Teresa (Neil Gemaehlich) Kummer, Don (Misty) Koebrick, and Charles Barrett; 18 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and other family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands: Jacob Kummer II, Donald Koebrick, and Joseph Barrett; and brother, James Waterman.
