College Volleyball: UNI falls to #25 Marquette, 3-1

CEDAR FALLS – The UNI volleyball team dropped their fifth match of the season to #25 Marquette on Saturday night, falling in set scores of 22-25, 27-25, 24-26, 18-25.

Set 1: Panthers and Golden Eagles battled early, while the Golden Eagles held the lead the Panthers stayed within two points the majority of the set. UNI surged midway through to tie the set at 16-16 and took the lead 20-19. The Golden Eagles responded by scoring the final three points. The Panthers dropped the set 22-25. UNI finished with 17 kills, 3 blocks and 1 service ace.

Set 2: The Panthers went out to an early 5-2 lead putting the pressure on the Golden Eagles. The match was tied at 10-10 when the Golden Eagles took their first lead of the set. The Panthers responded by going on a run, leading by as many as 4. The Golden eagles tied the set at 24-24, pushed to extra points the Panthers took the set 27-25. The Panthers finished with 11 kills, 2 blocks and 2 service aces.

Set 3: The Panthers dominated the third set, leading throughout the set. UNI went out to an 17-11 lead then Marquette went on a run, tying the set at 17-17. Both teams battled to a 24-24 tie with Marquette pushing for the final two. The Panthers dropped the set 24-26. UNI finished with 13 kills, 4 blocks and 1 service ace.

Set 4: The Panthers went out to 3-0 lead before the Golden Eagles scored their first point. Marquette moved ahead 16-11 midway through the set and never looked back, taking the set 25-18. The Panthers finished the fourth set with 8 kills, 3 blocks, and 1 service ace.

THE PANTHERS:
-UNI recorded 49 kills with 24 errors and .192 team hitting percentage.
-Emily Holterhaus finished one digs shy of the double-double with 16 kills and 9 digs.
-Tayler Alden recorded 36 assists and 7 kills on 15 swings for a .267 hitting percentage.
-Carly Spies finished with a team high .357 hitting percentage, recording 6 kills on 13 swings.

THE GOLDEN EAGLES:

-Marquette recorded 60 kills with 20 errors for a .296 hitting percentage.
-Home Werch led the team with 12 kills followed by Hannah Vanden Berg and Kaitlyn Lines with 10.
-Taylor Wolf finished with 25 assists while Claire Mosher finished with 21 assists.

UP NEXT:
The Panthers will get back to MVC play, traveling to Evansville, Indiana for two matches on Feb 7 and 8. The Panthers and Purple Aces will play at 2 pm on Sunday and 4 pm on Monday night.
