AMES – No. 9 Missouri (7-0, 0-0 MAC) defeated No. 10 Iowa State (3-1, 0-0 Big 12), 31-7, in wrestling action Sunday afternoon in Hilton Coliseum.
Missouri took advantage early by winning close matches in the first four bouts. Connor Brown edged Kysen Terukina, 5-4, with a reversal in the final moments at 125 pounds, and Matt Schmitt got a late takedown in the third period to defeat Zach Redding in the 133-pound match.
David Carr got the Cyclones on the board with a 14-1 major decision over Jarrett Jacques at 157 pounds. Carr had four-point nearfalls in the first and third period in the dominating victory. Carr, ranked third nationally, improves to 4-0 on the season with four bonus-point victories.
Yonger Bastida fell to Rocky Elam, 5-4, in a tight match at 197 pounds. Bastida had two first-period takedowns, but Elam won with three escapes, a stalling point and riding time, staying on top of Bastida all two minutes of the third period.
Gannon Gremmel closed out the match with a victory at heavyweight over Zach Elam. After giving up a first-period takedown, Gremmel battled back with a pair of escapes, two stalling points, a takedown and riding time in a 7-2 triumph.
Iowa State will face Oklahoma on Sunday (Jan. 24) in Cedar Falls.
