Authorities rescue neglected dogs and chickens from Kossuth county residence

ALGONA – Authorities rescued neglected dogs and chickens from a Kossuth county residence.

On January 11, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation received a request to assist the Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office regarding a welfare check associated with an animal neglect investigation at 407 Clay Street in Whittemore, Iowa.  The DCI Crime Scene Team assisted at the residence after officers made the residence safe.

The Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the Kossuth County Emergency Management and Betsy’s Barn from Cylinder, Iowa, rescued 8 dogs and 10 chickens from a residence at 407 Clay Street Whittemore, Iowa, due to concerns of animal neglect, as defined in the State Code of Iowa. The dogs were transported to receive medical evaluation and treatment through the Humboldt Vet Clinic. Peace Creek Animal Rescue out of Humboldt will care for the dogs until adoption families can be found and the chickens were taken to Betsy’s Barn in Cylinder.

In an effort to calm social media rumors, the Sheriff’s Office can confirm that there were no dead bodies discovered at the residence and there continues to be no immediate threat of public safety from this investigation.

The DCI is continuing to assist with this on-going investigation. Please see the attached press release from the Kossuth County Sheriff’s Officer regarding this incident.
