Manhunt in Emmet county lands fugitive behind bars

ESTHERVILLE – Police hunted a wanted man Monday and caught him at a Northern Iowa state park.

A man is in custody following a manhunt in Emmet County on August 31st 2020. According to Emmet County Sheriff Mike Martens, a sheriff’s deputy on patrol in Ft. Defiance State Park shortly after 2:30 P< observed a male sitting on a motorcycle in the public parking area near the East entrance of the park. The male and the motorcycle matched the description of a man wanted on federal charges and who was believed to possibly be armed. When the deputy attempted to investigate the incident, the male ran north into heavily wooded area of Ft. Defiance in an attempt to flee the deputy. Additional personnel from the sheriff’s office, Estherville Police Department, Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement arrived on the scene to establish a perimeter around the area of Ft. Defiance. The “MART” (multi-agency response team) also responded to the scene to conduct a search of the area. During the search of the area K-9 “Yoshi” from Kossuth County led officers through approximately ½ mile of the wooded area to a riverbank cutout where Christopher Michael Frerichs age 44 of Milford, Iowa was hiding. Frerichs was taken into custody without incident at 6:29pm and transported to the Emmet County Jail where he will be held until he is turned over to the United States Marshal’s Service. Also assisting at the scene was Iowa State Patrol, Emmet County Emergency Management, Estherville Fire Department, Estherville Ambulance Service and both Spencer and Estherville Police Department's K-9's and handlers.
