College Basketball: UNI defeats Drake, 70-43

DES MOINES –  The Panthers claimed the MVC Regular Season Title after defeating the Bulldogs of Drake 70-43 in the Knapp Center. Austin Phyfe led the Panthers with physical play in the paint, hauling in 18 rebounds, while scoring 17 points.

The Panthers opened the first half with a physical presence in the paint, scoring 24 first half points in the paint to take a 30-18 lead into halftime. The Panthers shot 42 percent from the field in the opening twenty minutes while holding the Bulldogs to 31 percent from the field. UNI finished 1-7 from beyond the arc, a typical strong point in the Panther offense.

Four Panthers finished in double digit scoring led by Sophomore Austin Phyfe led the Panthers with 17 points, recording 16 points in the paint. Both AJ Green and Isaiah Brown recorded 15 points, and freshman Noah Carter finished with 11 points after recording eight points in two minutes to extend the Panthers lead to 15 with 12:06 remaining in the game.

The Panthers recorded 44 points in the paint while holding Drake to just 20. The Panthers defense pickled up in the second half, holding the Bulldogs to 8-27 form the field in the final 20 minutes. The Panthers outrebounded the Bulldogs 44-32 and recorded six steals. UNI led for all but 42 seconds, recording the team’s biggest lead of 27 points with 1:44 remaining in the game.


–          Austin Phyfe finished with his 9th double-double of the season totaling 18 rebounds, 17 points, 2 blocks and 2 assists.

–          AJ Green and Isaiah Brown both recorded 15 points and Noah Carter finished with 11.

–          Panthers have previously won the regular season during the 2009-10 season and shared the title in 2008-09.

–          The Panthers have held the #1 Seed in Arch Madness twice (2008-09, 2009-10) going 6-0 in those contest, winning two MVC Championships.


The Panthers will now shift their focus to the MVC Tournament. With the top seed secured, the Panthers are set to play in the quarter final round at noon on Friday in the Enterprise Center in downtown St. Louis. The MVC quarter finals will be broadcast on MVC TV Network. Games will be aired on Fox Sports Midwest, Fox Sports Indiana and Fox Sports Kansas City.
