Iowa Democratic Party selects new interim chairman in wake of caucus debacle

DES MOINES – The Iowa Democratic Party has selected a new interim chairman in the wake of this month’s caucus debacle.

Rep. Mark Smith from Marshall County was selected to lead the party. “The Iowa Democratic Party is thrilled to announce Representative Mark Smith as our new Chair,” the organization said via Twitter on Saturday. Mark Smith epresents Marshalltown in the Iowa State House, and formerly served as House Dem Leader. “A sixth generation Iowan, Mark has the breadth of experience and record of leadership to strengthen our path to victory and elect Democrats up and down the ballot this Nov.”

IDP Chairman Troy Price resigned Wednesday.

“The fact is that Democrats deserved better than what happened on caucus night. As chair of this party, I am deeply sorry for what happened and bear the responsibility for any failures on behalf of the Iowa Democratic Party,” Price wrote in his resignation letter.
