Senator Ragan: Let’s make Iowa a more welcoming place

Amanda Ragan
The following is a legislative update from State Senator Amanda Ragan, representing Franklin, Butler and Cerro Gordo counties:

We kicked off the 2020 legislative session on Monday. I hope we will spend the next few months building a healthier, happier, safer and stronger Iowa for our families, friends and neighbors.

During the first week of session, the Legislature heard from the Governor, the Chief Justice of the Iowa Supreme Court, the Adjutant General of the Iowa National Guard, and Republican and Democratic legislative leaders. They laid out what they see as our state’s biggest needs and proposed solutions. Legislators will bring together all this information, along with input from constituents, and—ideally—work together to chart the best-possible course for Iowa.

Throughout the process my focus will be on ensuring the end result improves everyday life for Iowans. That means good-paying jobs, affordable and accessible health care, great schools, and revitalized neighborhoods and communities.

Many Iowans are being left behind in today’s economy. Wages aren’t keeping up with the rising cost of health care, food, housing and child care. Schools and hospitals are closing throughout the state. Folks are leaving their rural communities because they can’t get the opportunities and services they need.

Working together, we can turn things around, and make Iowa a more welcoming place to call home.

Last year, the Legislature made real progress on several initiatives that Iowans are asking us to act on. Wrapping up these unfinished tasks is a good place to start:

  • Let’s give Iowans a second chance by restoring voting rights to those leaving prison and returning home. Many returning citizens are working, paying taxes and contributing to their communities. They’ve served their sentences and deserve to participate in their government.
  • Let’s pass a meaningful medical cannabis law that helps Iowans get the relief they need from chronic pain and debilitating diseases.
  • Let’s clean up Iowa’s water and increase cultural and recreational opportunities, especially in our small towns and rural areas.
  • Let’s fight to protect residents of manufactured homes. Even though they own their homes, they have fewer rights than renters and are facing outrageous rate hikes from predatory, out-of-state landlords.

that needed to be thought of before it was turned into a corporate pig pen – no evidence of being good stewards to the water, soil and air all destroyed by design from the social engineers – the water and top soil can never be repaired it was ruined by a few for $ that was the carrot to get the agenda of destroying the environment done

She’s been in office forever and what has she done besides raise taxes and give the money to schools with zero results?

Run against her then or is your past so sordid that you can’t?

Let’s make Iowa a more welcoming place. will that happen when she is out of office?

Hope so.

When are you throwing your hat in the ring to run against her? If she is so bad for us, then it should be easy for such a smart guy as you to beat her.
