College Basketball: UNI defeats #23 Colorado, 79-76

BOULDER, CO – The UNI men’s basketball team took on the Buffaloes of Colorado, defeating the #23 Buffaloes 79-76.

Panthers led 9-3 early in the first half before Colorado’s Lucas Siewert scored 15 points in just over 3 minutes of play and gave the Buffalo a 5 point lead. The Panthers entered halftime leading the Buffalo by one. Statistically both teams where even, each shooting just over 38 percent from the field and knocking down five three pointers. The Buffaloes knocked down 7 of 8 free throws while the Panthers made 4-5.

The Panthers opened the second half on fire, going out to a 12 point lead just two minutes into the half. The buffaloes quickly bounced back, cutting the Panther lead to three in less than three minutes. With 10-10 remaining in the game the Buffaloes tied that game.

After 9 minutes of back and forth play and tied 76-76 Spencer Haldeman recorded a steal and the time line and made the layup to put the Panthers ahead by 2. AJ Green sealed the win just 22 seconds later at the free throw line to knock off #23 Colorado.

KEY STATS

–          AJ Green totaled 20 points going 6-16 from the field and 5-10 from three.

–          Trae Berhow finished with 20 points going 6-8 from the field and 5-6 from three

–          Isaiah Brown led the team with 5 assists

–          Austin Phyfe hauled in a team high 7 rebounds, 5 offensive, 2 defensive

The Panthers, now 9-1, will travel to Phoenix, Arizona to take on Grand Canyon on Thursday night. The Antelopes are 4-7 on the season and are coming off a 61-70 loss to Liberty. The Antelopes visited the McLeod Center least season and came away with a win, defeating the Panthers 73-62.  Thursday’s game will tip off at 8:00 PM CT and can be viewed on ESPN3.
