College basketball: Iowa pummels Illinois, 95-71

IOWA CITY – The Iowa men’s basketball team used hot shooting to demolish the Illinois Fighting Illini, 95-71, Sunday afternoon in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Iowa set a Carver-Hawkeye Arena record for field goal percentage making 68 percent of its attempts (34-of-50). The previous mark was 67.5 percent (27-of-40) versus Air Force on Dec. 28, 2004.

Iowa had three players score 20+ points today: Joe Wieskamp (24), Isaiah Moss (21), and Luka Garza (20).

The nationally-ranked Hawkeyes have won five straight and ten of its last 11 games, dating back to Dec. 6.

Iowa has scored 94 points or more in the last three games versus Illinois (104 at Illinois on Jan. 11, 2018; 96 in New York on Feb. 28, 2018; 95 in Iowa City on Jan. 20, 2019).

Freshman Joe Wieskamp made all of his shot attempts today (8-of-8 FG, 6-of-6 3pt FG, 2-of-2 FT). He scored 14 of his 24 points in the first half, sinking all four 3-point attempts in the first 20 minutes.

Iowa assisted on 29 of its 34 made field goals (85%).

Isaiah Moss drained a career-high five 3-pointers, making his first five attempts. The Illinois native finished the contest with 21 points.

Tyler Cook became the 26th player in program history to total 1,000 career points and 500 rebounds with his first-half rebounding total from today.

Iowa improved to 11-1 in home games this season.

Iowa made 12 of its first 14 3-point attempts. Isaiah Moss and Joe Wieskamp each made their first five attempts, while Jordan Bohannon made his first two attempts.

Today was the only regular season meeting between Iowa and Illinois.  Next, Iowa faces #6 Michigan State in a home game Thursday.
