NEW YORK – Superb free throw shooting helped Iowa defeat #13 Oregon in Madison Square Garden Thursday night, 77-69.
The game was played as part of the 2K Empire Classic. Iowa was 29-of-33 from the free throw line, including 28-of-30 in the second half. Those free throws staved off any comeback attempts by Oregon. Iowa was led by Jordan Bohannon with 16 points.
The Hawkeyes made a season-best 10 3-pointers in the game.
Star forward Tyler Cook said after the game, “GREAT team win tonight. Another opportunity tomorrow.”
Iowa’s last win over a ranked opponent was March 2, 2017 (59-57 win at No. 21 Wisconsin). Iowa’s last win over a ranked opponent on a neutral floor was an 84-61 win over No. 20 Wichita State on Nov. 29, 2015 in Orlando, Florida.
Iowa returns to action on Friday in the championship game of the 2K Empire Classic against Connecticut inside Madison Square Garden. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. (CT). The game will be televised on ESPN2.
Friday will be Iowa’s first meeting against Connecticut since a 70-68 win over the Huskies, ranked No. 1 at the time, on Nov. 11, 1999 also inside The Garden.
